If you’re looking for a joyful way to kick off the new year with your family, the Aurora Public Library District has you covered. Our annual Three Kings Day Celebration will return to the Santori Library Sunday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. to bring family fun, cultural traditions, and moments children and caregivers can enjoy together.

Three Kings Day, also known as Día de los Reyes Magos, is a holiday that is celebrated grandly in many Latin American countries. In Mexico, this day is especially meaningful for children. Instead of Santa Claus, it’s the Three Kings who bring gifts, and families often gather to share rosca de reyes (sweet bread), stories, and time together. At APLD, our celebratory event proudly honors this beloved tradition and its importance in Mexican culture.

Like many traditions, family and connection are at the heart of the celebration. When you walk through the library doors, the first thing you’ll notice is the large family style seating in the Atrium. At the table alongside your friends and neighbors, you can make your own crown craft, enjoy some sweet bread, and await your turn to take a photo with the Three Wise Men (who will be in attendance!). The Aurora Police Department will also be there, handing out stuffed animals to children. “My favorite part is seeing our young customers’ faces when they meet the Three Wise Men and receive a gift from APD,” said elementary school services coordinator and event organizer Mariana. “Those are the moments that make the event really special.”

One exciting highlight this year is a brand-new twist on a classic game. “This year we have a very unique APLD-themed Lotería made by library staff with lots of love,” said Mariana. Lotería is a traditional Mexican game similar to Bingo, which uses images to make matches on your tablas (playing board). “Besides being super fun, it also promotes our amazing services,” she added. “Plus, we have fabulous prizes!”

Beyond the crafts and games, you will get to experience a piece of Mexico while enjoying family time at the library. Whether you’re continuing a cherished tradition or discovering it for the first time, the Three Kings Day Celebration at Santori Library promises laughter, community, and holiday magic. We’ll see you at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4 in the Santori Library Atrium. This is a bilingual event, presented in both Spanish and English.
