After sitting vacant for 13 years, Lincoln Elementary School will soon be filled with new people and good energy under a different name.

Aurora officials participate in groundbreaking ceremony for new affordable housing units at the former Lincoln Elementary School and Todd Elementary School in West Aurora School District 129.

The City of Aurora held a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Fox Valley Apartments, an affordable apartment complex located at both the former Lincoln Elementary School and nearby former Todd Elementary School, which has been shuttered since 2019.

A total of 47 studio, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments will be available for rent to individuals or families earning between $18,000 and $63,000 per year.

The initiative is a collaboration with the City and Visionary Ventures, a Chicago-based non-profit organization provides opportunities and access to housing to create a better everyday life for Native American, underserved and low-income populations.

The ceremony also featured a special Native American land acknowledgment and blessing from Ronnie Preston of the American Indian Center in honor of the City’s history with the indigenous community.

The former principal of Lincoln Elementary School, Cynthia Latimer, presented the last flag that flew at the school to the new property owners. It will be raised during the grand opening next Spring.
