Mayor of Aurora, Richard Irvin, and the City Council honored city of Aurora government employees and students in Aurora’s schools with Black History Month proclamations (see below).

Mayor Irvin appointed:

• Symone Lewis and Hortencia Ramos and reappointed Susan Sosa Bachmeier to the Aurora Human Relations Commission.

• Marjorie Logman, Jonathan Monsma, Terri Voitik, and reappointed Bernina Perkins, Caryl Riley, Karen Wan, and Mavis Bates to Sustainable Aurora (the mayor’s sustainable Aurora advisory Board).

• Sandra Alvarez and Randy Fisher to the Aurora Veterans Advisory Council.

• David Mertz to the Electrical Commission with the reappointment of Shaun Thomas and Gary Krienitz.

• Approved was a resolution to purchase a 1500 gallon per minute fire engine from Fire Service Inc. of St. John, Indiana for $562,795.

• Approved was a resolution to extend the Aurora city government’s fiber-optic cable plant from the southwest side of Diehl Road at Eola Road to the east side of Diehl Road in Aurora.

The city government of Aurora shared information about the old Copley Hospital site in a news release this week and stated more than 60% of the campus had been cleaned of asbestos and debris.

For nearly 25 years, the campus has been vacant and has become an eyesore and danger to the neighboring community, which includes Bardwell Elementary School. This first phase of the project will provide a foundation for future phases of development that will rehab and re-purpose the campus and help to rejuvenate the neighborhood.
