The Aurora Police Department is proud to announce the launch of its new Blue Envelope Program, a voluntary initiative designed to improve communication and promote safer interactions between first responders and individuals with autism or other communication differences.

The program provides community members with a blue envelope that can store important documents such as a driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, along with personalized information that may assist officers during a traffic stop or other interaction. This may include communication preferences, sensory sensitivities, emergency contact information, or behaviors that could otherwise be misunderstood during a high-stress situation.

“The Blue Envelope Program is about creating understanding, reducing anxiety, and improving safety for everyone involved,” said Aurora Police Chief, Matt Thomas. “This initiative gives officers helpful information while also giving individuals and families peace of mind during interactions with law enforcement.”

When officers are presented with a Blue Envelope, it serves as an immediate visual indicator that communication adjustments may be needed. Officers are encouraged to review the information provided and approach the interaction with patience, awareness, and understanding.

The program is completely voluntary and is intended to strengthen trust and communication between the Aurora Police Department and the community. Blue Envelopes are available free of charge at 1200 E. Indian Trail, Aurora, at the Aurora Police Department Front Desk.
