An Aurora woman faces a felony domestic battery charge for biting off the ear of a person in her household.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon has charged 59-year-old Nelida Mendoza with the offense of aggravated domestic battery, Class 2 felony.

Kane County prosecutors allege in charging documents that the evening of Nov. 18, 2018, Mendoza bit off the victim’s right ear, causing great bodily harm.

According to Aurora police, Mendoza and the victim were watching TV Sunday evening when a disagreement began. Mendoza then bit off the victim’s right ear. The victim went to a local hospital, where personnel notified police.

Mendoza appeared this morning in Kane County bond court. Associate Judge Keith Johnson set Mendoza’s bail at $70,000 with 10 percent ($7,000) to apply for bond. Judge Johnson set Mendoza’s next court appearance for 9 a.m. Nov. 28, 2018, in front of Circuit Judge Clint Hull in Courtroom 305 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

The charges against Mendoza are not proof of guilt. Mendoza is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the state’s burden to prove her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
