We do live in a wide world. There are many facets to our world if we wander and wonder. If we look around and absorb. There are examples from which to choose:
• A 23-year-old woman feeds her desire to be distinctive and live in a world which receives kindness of others. Yanise Ho (click here to see photo) grew up in Hong Kong and has been in the U.S. since she was 17 years old. She is seeing the U.S. on roller blades without a sense of rushing to completion. She depends on kindness of those she passes along the way. Her path: Miami, Fla. to New York City, to Chicago, Yorkville, and ultimately the West Coast. She cherishes her freedom and ability to connect with strangers. No doubt friends, connections, and social media have helped.
• Boldly, in nearly uncharted paths, the Oswegoland Park District’s Dave Krahn (click here to see photo) and a cadre of committee members are on a journey to create a Veterans Serenity Park in Oswego in an area which once was a greenhouse. Not far from busy U.S. Route 34, the memorial to veterans will be a serenity park for visits and refuge. It is a combination of public and private partnership. Each service of the military will be honored. At the end of the Wednesday, Aug. 1 official introduction with a conceptual design at the site prior to the start of excavating work, Herschel Luckinbill of the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club made a pledge of $7,500 to assist in financial contributions.
Aurora-Roosevelt American Legion Post 84 commander, Mike Eckburg, is leading a third year of sponsorship for, along with Friends of LaSalle Street Auto Row, the Sunday, Aug. 19 event. There is something about the LaSalle Street Auto Show, likely from an historical perspective when many years ago there were auto showrooms on LaSalle Street. There are car shows every weekend, however, the LaSalle Street show brings in special classic and modified cars.
• Montgomery Fest, Friday through Sunday, will hold its annual car show with registration starting at 8 a.m. Sunday at Austin Park. The annual parade will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday.
• More car show notes: The Carousel Sound Company will hold shows many evenings in August.
• Aurora aldermen will hold back-to-school events Friday, Sunday, and Sunday, Aug. 19, including an ice cream social. Summer is fading. Absorb many events!
