Poem: Both Sad And Accurate

I’m truly sorry, but I know that I am right;
My being a black woman, you a male white.
Our love may be quite real—in fact, I think, quite strong,
But many social graces say that it is wrong.
Oh, yes, things are much better than 50 years ago,
But bigotry, in many ways, still blossoms though.
If we decide to test this out, to ride the storm,
We would be in a constant battle fighting norm.
But people do what they feel they’re compelled to do,
Which puts us in the middle, forced to see it through.
Your business and career is based on your repute;
Your reputation makes or breaks you, no dispute.
So let our love fall back into a friendship mold;
For that is one thing they can’t fight as we grow old!
