Chili Appreciation Society International’s (CASI) Batavia Chili Cook-Off Saturday, Aug. 7 was at the Batavia Riverwalk. CASI was host, along with Batavia Chamber of Commerce and the Batavia Park District. Competition included a CASI State contest and a community competition. Batavian Jay Cherry, an acoustic guitarist, performed rock and pop hits from the 1960s through the 1990s at the Peg Bond Center stage. Winners included those listed below:
• People’s Choice Awards: Community, Batavia School District 101; and regular chili, Debra Hunt, Harvey.
• Traditional Chili: First place, Kristen Dahnert, Lindenhurst; second place, Mike Usiak, Chicago; and third place, Debra Hunt, Harvey.
• CASI Chili: First place, Kim Spencer, Clinton, Iowa; first place showmanship, Kristen Dahnert, Lindenhurst; second place, Brian Spencer, Clinton, Iowa; second place showmanship, Debra Hunt, Harvey; third place, Jim Weller, Rockton; third place showmanship, Tim Hoffman; fourth place, Rick Geiger, Midlothian; fifth place, Timothy Hoffman, Oxford, Wis.; sixth place, Jake Apel, Elgin; seventh place, Debra Hunt, Harvey; eighth place, John Gastaldello, Downers Grove; ninth place, Virgil Johnson, Ottumwa, Iowa; and 10th place, Bill Gowans, Chicago.
