Incumbent mayors Steve Chirico of Naperville and David Kaptain of Elgin won their respective re-election bids in the consolidated election Tuesday.

Incumbent executive leaders Gail Johnson of Oswego and Gary Golinski of Yorkville, however, fell to defeat in their bids to remain in office.

A variety of referenda, tax hikes, and advisories were met with mixed reactions amid turnouts of voters which failed to surpass 20% in most cases.

With no incumbents running for chief executives in Wheaton, Downers Grove, and Darien, all in DuPage County, there will be new mayors.

Chirico won in a close and heated race with challenger Richard G. “Rocky” Caylor, 51.7% to 48.3%, or, 9,412 to 8,792.

Williams, 965, 17.11%; Emmanuel Llamas was elected in Ward 1 without an incumbent, with 475 votes, 41.20%; Amanda Sperzel, 403, 34.95%; Caryl Riley, 173, 15.00% and Peter Aguilera, 81, 7.03%; and both incumbents Carl Franco in the 5th Ward, and Mike Saville in the 6th Ward won re-elections handily.
