Libraries have long been centers of learning and connection, and now they are also spaces where families can explore what it means to be healthy! As May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how the Aurora Public Library District can nurture not only children’s literacy skills, but also their social, emotional, and physical well-being. To do that, we are hosting a Mind, Body, and Community Wellness Fair from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 16 at the Santori Library, designed for children and their caregivers. This family event offers an engaging and welcoming environment where attendees can discover fun, practical ways to support their overall wellness.
Caring for our well-being is important at every age, but especially during childhood when lifelong habits begin to take shape. If talking about mental health sounds intimidating, remember that it’s as simple as helping children recognize their feelings, care for themselves, and show empathy toward others. These lessons don’t require formal conversations—they can grow through small, playful moments.
At our Wellness Fair, families will explore interactive stations focused on different aspects of wellness, giving children a chance to learn through play while caregivers discover practical ideas to implement at home. There will be a snack demonstration to teach healthy eating habits, a Happy Kids storytime about empathy and hope, and family yoga to stretch our bodies and practice breathing exercises. We’ll also have craft stations, giveaways, and bubbles in the garden! Believe it or not, these fun, everyday activities are actually teaching important skills that help children feel confident and prepared to face the world.
The event will also feature local community partners, offering valuable information and resources related to family health and wellness. “We hope to bridge any gap between community members and local health resources, specifically in areas like mental health, nutrition, and preventive care” said Library assistant, Ratna. From learning about local programs to discovering new services, families can leave feeling more informed and supported.
Whether you’re looking for new activities to try at home or simply a chance to connect with your community, this event has something for everyone. The Mind, Body, and Community Wellness Fair is a reminder that taking care of our mental and physical health starts with small, meaningful steps. Join us Saturday, May 16 and discover new ways to support your family’s well-being and connect with others.
