Thursday, May 19, the Cosmopolitan Club of Aurora will meet at the Oak Street Restaurant, 945 Oak Street, in North Aurora.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Richard Steslow, DO, a family medicine specialist, practicing at the South Naperville Family Practice and affiliated with Rush Copley Medical Center-Wound Care Center.

Next will be the Club’s biggest fundraiser, June 24.

The 5 B’s Spring BBQ Thursday, April 28, at Advent Christian Church, in Aurora, was our first fundraiser of the year, and thanks to all who worked, sold and/or purchased tickets, we raised almost $1,800 to aid in our fight against diabetes.

Mark your calendar: We’re only 36 days away from our Club’s major fundraiser, “A Night at the Farm” held Friday, June 24, 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., in the Barn at Blackberry Farm, 100 S. Barnes Road, Aurora. Refreshments and cash bar by Spartan House, live entertainment by “The Magneto’s” classic rock and blues band, basket raffles, 50/50 drawing, and free door prize drawings throughout the evening.

Tickets are $30/person. Contact: LaVonne Hawking, 630-966-0657, or send an E-mail to cosmoaurorail@gmail.com.

Proceeds will provide funds for diabetes research at the UChicago Medicine-Kovler Diabetes Center, ADA Summer Camps for Diabetic Children, Diabetes education for recently-diagnosed underinsured diabetics at the Rush Copley Diabetes Educational Center, and assisting diabetics in obtaining Diabetic Alert Dogs (DAD’s), through the Jerry Youngren Diabetic Alert Dog Memorial Fund.

Friday, June 3, the Cosmopolitan Club of Aurora will celebrate 95 years of continued service to Aurora and its surrounding communities. The Aurora Historical Society, 20 E.Downer Place, Downtown Aurora, will be host to the presentation at 7:30 p.m..

• Our Club’s historical journey began Monday, June 6, 1927, when the Cosmopolitan Club of Aurora, held its Inaugural Banquet, at the Masonic Temple, where 65 civic-minded individuals became the Cosmopolitan Club of Aurora, Illinois.

• The Edna Smith Children’s Home, known as the Juvenile Protective Association, was the club’s first major project that lasted through the late 1950s.

• Beginning in 1954, through the 1970s the Club’s major project became the Aurora Historical Museum, and the cry went out by Cosmopolitans to “Save the Tanner House.”

• In the late 1970s with the incorporation of the Cosmopolitan Diabetes Foundation, all Cosmopolitans made a commitment to join together to fight diabetes, thus becoming The Club That Fights Diabetes. In addition to contributing yearly to the Cosmopolitan Diabetes Foundation, our Club grants thousands of dollars locally for diabetes research, education, provides sponsorships to diabetic kids for ADA Summer camps, holds diabetes awareness events, and we’re want to help sponsor a diabetic alert dog, for a qualified recipient.
