The Aurora Public Library (APL) will be host to “Cutting the Cord: Get the Programs You Want for Less!” at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 2. Those attending virtually can find out how to receive the shows they want while avoiding the high costs of cable television, or Direct TV.

Naomi Blackburn will discuss the history and current landscape of cord-cutting, streaming services, and new platforms coming out in the future. She will discuss the equipment that is available to utilize these services, such as antennas, DVRs, and streaming sticks. This program will be offered virtually through Zoom. Please register at www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/events to receive a Zoom invitation. Participants without computer access will be able to call in.

The harsh reality of the COVID-19 pandemic is that many of us have been staying home more often, even as the State begins to reopen. Now may be an opportune time to reconsider your in-home entertainment; or, perhaps you have been considering cutting the cord for a while but were unsure of how to get started. Some streaming services allow for a little more customizing, but it may be overwhelming to sort through all of the available options, especially for those who are not especially tech savvy. However, a little bit of guidance goes a long way. Naomi Blackburn will walk us through some of the alternatives to cable and how to make the switch.

Events and program coordinator, Krista Danis, said, “The world of streaming is so confusing for so many people who are only familiar with cable. Naomi Blackburn uncomplicates the options and process so you can make the best decision for you and your family.”

• The Library will have many other virtual programs of importance, including the recurring book club, “What We’re Reading Wednesdays.” Those who join APL librarians for a fun evening of sharing the books you have been reading on the first and third Wednesdays of the month can receive great suggestions to add to your to-read lists and be inspired by your neighbors’ and librarians’ recommendations. The next meeting will be at 8 p.m. July 15. Please register at www.aurorapubliclibrary.org/events to receive a Zoom invitation and password. Alternatively, the book club meeting will be on Facebook Live @APLibraryIL!

• Additionally, an important focus will be “2020 Census – Why Is It Important?” at 7 p.m. July 16. College of DuPage sociology professor, Matthew Green, will address what is new with the 2020 Census and why it is important to our community.
