It was very interesting to visit with and speak to Detective Ketchmark and Detective Goldsmith during our forensic science class at Grace Holistic Center for Education last week. It’s one thing to watch a documentary online or read about things such as collecting evidence and solving criminal cases, but it’s pretty intriguing to really hear how it’s done from the professionals. One thing that Detectives Ketchmark and Goldsmith explained to us was the more realistic version of the process for collecting and submitting evidence. Many TV shows convey this as quick and easy, but after speaking to real detectives you’ll find that it is actually fairly difficult to collect viable evidence to send to the state lab, and once you do send in the evidence it can take months for them to find a possible match for the evidence, or they may not find one at all. The detectives also talked to us about different techniques they use to collect evidence, such as fingerprinting or finding the trajectory of bullets. Overall, we liked learning from Detective Ketchmark and Detective Goldsmith, and it was good to see that they really enjoy what they do. I’m glad they took the time to come to our school and educate us on evidence collection and its processes! Grace Holistic Center for Education
