Diabetes Club of Fox Valley host to health speaker

Guest speaker for the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley’s September 14 membership meeting, was Maricela (Mari) Perez-Renteria, MSN, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, a nurse practitioner and owner of Santa Maria Health, in Aurora. Mari worked for Aunt Martha’s for 17 years prior to the opening of Santa Maria Health. Mari discussed the five stages of grief experienced when persons are diagnosed with diabetes. The f stages are denial and isolation, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

She said we should look at what we’re doing in a holistic way, because our mental health can be affected by a diabetes diagnosis. Mari stated that in our country, we value independence and that can lead to loneliness, so it’s important that we maintain relationships. Thank you, Mari, for an excellent presentation!

Several members from the Diabetes Club of Fox Valley attended NYC Marathon Team McLaren’s, Rocking Out, and Raising Funds for Project ALS, Saturday, Sept. 16 at the Voris Homestead on Prairie Street in Aurora. The LeGrande Band members played to a large crowd which attended the fundraiser. The Diabetes Club of Fox Valley collected donations from members in attendance at their membership meeting Thursday, Sept. 14, for NYC Marathon Team McLaren’s “Rocking Out and Raising Funds for Project ALS”. Team McLaren members, Patrick Rodney, Scott Voris, Janie Voris, Ben Laura, Grace Plain, and Teddy Radtke, held the event in remembrance of their good friend, Eric McLaren. Several DCFV members attended the fundraiser held at the Voris homestead on Prairie Street in Aurora. Two Brothers donated the beer, food was available from an onsite taco truck, with live music from LeGrande Band, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and check out Team McLaren’s team fundraising page for Project ALS at: fundraise.projectals.org.
