Fearful: COVID-19 at DMV driver’s test

Dear editor;

Because I will be 77 in September, I will need to take the driver’s test to renew my license. I have been so very careful to keep myself safe during the COVID-19 pandemic by staying at home, staying at a distance and wearing a mask when I go out.

I have four health issues that keep me very careful to avoid the virus.

I was beyond alarmed to know that in renewing my license I am required to have a DMV person in my car some one-and-a-half feet from me. I don’t have friends in my car! I understand that this person shall wear a mask and have gloves but that gives me no comfort. Having a stranger in my car who has dealt continually with the public, gives me great fear. I am so very concerned for that DMV worker who will be exposed, as well. I feel confident other seniors, the most vulnerable, are scared, too.

I am wondering why the State has not issued a one-year grace period for senior drivers with flawless records allowing them to renew on line. Surely this would, under the circumstances of our present situation, be better for all concerned.

I wonder how many indiviudals would consider it better to drive on an expired license than to take the drivers’ tests and get the virus that ultimately could result in their deaths.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Smith, Big Rock
