Poem: For Heaven’s Sake

I figure Heaven’s still a lonely place;
For the Commandments say what we will face
Upon the Day of Judgment, stern and stark,
And the direction on which we’d embark.
We dare not think that God will hem and haw,
Allowing us to circumvent the Law.
For, after all, the Law’s the Law—point blank;
And we have no one but ourselves to thank.
We make excuses for ourselves like mad,
Plus vast distinctions as to what is bad
The Bottom Line to this, we must admit,
Is our way “How to get away with it.”
There can’t be many who would sail right through;
With not so much a raised eyebrow to view.
I think there are improvements we must make;
For an excuse, just say: “For Heaven’s sake!”
