The Aurora Public Library District is inviting readers of all ages to rediscover the joy of comics during Free Comic Book Day, a nationwide celebration of storytelling, creativity, and imagination. Saturday, May 2, all APLD locations will offer free comic books for visitors to take home and enjoy! Whether you’re a lifelong comic fan or someone who’s never picked one up before, Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is the perfect opportunity to explore new worlds—no superpowers required.

Comics are more than colorful panels and heroic adventures. They’re a powerful blend of illustrations and literature that tell complex stories in accessible, engaging ways. Comic books are wonderful for all readers due to their manageable bubbles of text, fast-paced action, and immediate gratification. They support visual literacy, vocabulary development, and a genuine love of reading! “People will be able to explore comics of different genres and interests during our giveaway,” said event and program coordinator, Ali. There will be comics appropriate for a range of young readers and issues that tackle sophisticated themes that feel authentic and relatable for teens and adults. “We hope there will be something for everyone!” Ali added.

But Free Comic Book Day is about more than free books—it’s about connection. Comics have a unique way of bringing people together across ages, interests, and reading levels. Just look at the popularity of events like Comic Con and our own annual CAPE Con event, which draws people from all over for a shared love of fandoms. Besides these fan-to-fan connections, FCBD also aims to connect people with local comics and hobby shops (shout-out to our supplier, Graham Cracker Comics of Naperville). These shops, each with their own unique vibe and clientele, are what keep the artform alive for new generations of readers.

Best of all, Free Comic Book Day embodies what libraries do best: provide free access to ideas, stories, and shared experiences. “People who come in for Free Comic Book Day may also explore our graphic novel collections,” Ali said, noting that the event often introduces visitors to the library’s wide range of comic-style graphic novels, both on our shelves and digitally with an APLD card. Our Hoopla database has a collection of thousands of comics from big name publishers available to checkout anytime. So even if you aren’t able to attend the event, know that we have your comic needs covered!

Free Comic Book Day will be Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at all APLD locations (including the Bookmobile). Comics are available while supplies last. For more information about the nationwide event, visit www.freecomicbookday.com or contact the library at 630-264-4117.
