Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive May 11
The second Saturday in May is the largest one-day food drive in the Nation. It will take place in more than 10,000 cities and towns, and the food is collected by those men and women carrying our mail across the country.
When postal carriers deliver mail they will pick up nonperishable cans, and food items next to a mailbox.
Over the last 20 years, one Billion pounds of food has been delivered by this drive which is sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC). The letter carriers representing the NALC receive help from rural letter carriers, other postal employees , volunteers, and the U.S. Postal Service.
Volunteers at a post office will sort food gathered for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Visit www.nalc.org or www.usps.com. Use #StampOutHungerFoodDrive to show your support for this worthy cause!
The Stamp out Hunger Food Drive started in October 1991 as a pilot program. After the initial success of the drive that took place in 10 cities across the country, the program was moved to the Spring. Food banks during this time of year struggle to meet demand because contributions dwindle after the Christmas holiday season.
Aurora and Naperville NALC organizations have friendly competition each year to see who collect the most pounds of food.
