“Grow Your Own Groceries – in Containers,” a free seminar to help save money, build health, find more pleasure in tastier food, and acquire more energy by eating healthy, will take place Sunday, April 8, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren, 738 West Highland Avenue, Elgin. Ample parking is available south of the church and the building is handicapped-accessible.
The Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley will be host to the popular annual educational experience as a gift to the community and as a celebration of upcoming Earth Day, April 22.
Container gardening means no weeding, no kneeling in the dirt, no rototilling, no huge outlay of time, or energy. Even children and elderly persons can manage it. Because food will be free of herbicides, pesticides, antibiotics, GMOs, or other substances harmful to our human bodies, family will avoid cancers, allergies, diabetes, heart conditions, and other medical disorders linked to corporate agricultural practices, which frequently deliver unhealthy food products to our grocery stores.
Ron and Linda Stork, master gardeners with the Bolingbrook Garden Club, will share their knowledge and experience of growing food in their 22 containers. A sun-filled driveway, front steps, patio, or porch means that anyone who wants to, can grow their some of their own food without needing a big back yard, just by using a container.
The Just Food Initiative is devoted to empowering the poor, whether in money, time, knowledge, health, or lack of supportive community. Food justice issues on a personal level begin with awareness of how our supermarket foods can be harmful, followed by a discussion of what to do about it in our own families.
Although the seminar is free, pre-registration is required. Interested persons can register with Annamae Hill at the Just Food Initiative at info@jfi-foxvalley.org or at 630-470-8891. Please leave a name, phone number, and E-mail address.
