Hungry for more: Teen technology at Raspberry Pi

The popularity of a small piece of technology is on the rise among young computer programmers, and its name might make you hungry. Raspberry Pi is a cost-effective, super versatile, computer that is the size of a credit card! Today, virtually every industry has developed a use for Raspberry Pi, which is why the Aurora Public Library District (APLD) will be host to an all-day program for teens interested in learning how to use this limitless piece of technology.

Taught by Dr. Isuru Godage, assistant professor in the Department of Computing at DePaul University, this hands-on workshop will provide participants with a complete introduction to robotics by using the Raspberry Pi computer system. It will cover basic electronics and the Python programming language for managing hardware devices, interfacing sensors, controlling motors, and using output devices.

In other words, it can communicate with other technology in homes such as smart speakers and security systems, measure temperature or light, provide power, and turn on displays and buzzers. During this immersing program, participants will work in groups to build basic electronic circuits and complete tasks such as controlling LEDs and communicating over the internet.

Teen Librarian Cesar Ortega is excited to offer such a unique learning experience for our APLD customers.

“Most library programs are generally one to two hours long,” he said, “and some customers leave with a feeling of wanting more. “Well, this program will be a full day! It will mean from 9:30-4:30! When professor Isuru Godage reached out, I knew what a rare opportunity it would be for teens to learn from an expert in the field.”

Anyone in grades 6 through 12 who is interested in robotics, coding, programming, and electronics will enjoy this program. Registration is required because there is a limited number of spots available. Teens do not have to be APLD cardholders to participate. All materials, along with lunch, will be provided during this intensive workshop. The Library has plenty of books to help customers of all ages learn about coding and Raspberry Pi. Cardholders have access to the Library database LinkedIn Learning, with easy-to-follow videos on robotics and programming.
