Labor Day a true special holiday to most of us

All holidays are special to most of us.

Labor Day will be Monday, Sept. 4. To some individuals it is a day off, or, Summer’s Last Stand, or, an opportunity to take an extended holiday trip.

Labor Day is a special salute to those who work for a living, a large segment of society, and a well-deserved observance.

Most of us do not think of it, however, there are special days observed more than the number days of the year, 365.

Obviously some days mean more than other days of observances. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, lead the way for meaningful observances.

We should have respect for the meaningfulness of Labor Day for what ever reasons so many Americans enjoy, celebrate, live, on Labor Day.

It is a part of Americana that helps bring our country together. Given the last decade of political division, special holidays must be respected. Enjoyed.

Let us step up to understand the good things in our country and offer respect to a wide swath of the main segments in our society.

  • In spite of a filled Labor Day edition this week in The Voice, we have important elements which did not find space in The Voice, except for this column.
  • Community volunteers gathered recently for a special school-supplies packing party. More than 1,000 school supply kits were packed for elementary, middle, and high school, students for the 36th Martin Luther King Back-to-School Bash Sunday, Aug. 20. Most schools either started last week or are starting this week. Many years ago school resumed the day after Labor Day. Now, it works better for students to be back in school earlier and to start Summer earlier.
  • Notes for future events include Harvest of the Acorn Moon Fall Festival, noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24 by the Forest Preserve District at the Oakhurst Forest Preserve, 1680 Fifth Avenue in Aurora.
  • August 24 was the final day of the Oswego History Tour, An Afternoon the Kellog Farm and History Happy Hour, Prohibition. It was to be held at the Oswego Brewing Company, providing the event was not postponed or canceled due a high temperatures
  • The 11th annual Fiestas Patrias in Aurora will be September 9-10 at RiverEdge Park in Aurora. The event is sponsored by the City of Aurora’s Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board and RiverEdge Park.
  • Aurora Downtown named its new executive director, Christna “Tina” de Chaud this week. She will lead the non-profit organization providing programs and services to property and business owners. She brings 20 years of experience of such work, including manager of worldwide marketing at Foote, Cone, & Belding in Chicago.
