At the Aurora Public Library District, an average of 120 people become new cardholders each week. Behind each new registration is someone discovering a favorite author, researching a project, applying for a job, or learning a new skill. This month, APLD and libraries across the country are celebrating Library Card Sign-up Month and that one little card that keeps curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning in tune.
Your library card offers endless possibilities. Beyond the materials on our shelves, cardholders have access to digital and streaming titles, databases, local attractions, technology, and learning opportunities for all ages. Even APLD executive director Michaela Haberkern says she’s still discovering new ways to use her library card. “I love that everything I ever wanted to learn is so easily available,” said Michaela. “When I don’t know what to have for dinner, there are thousands of cookbooks to choose from. When I needed to learn about probate, I found articles on Explora Legal Information. When I wanted to learn pivot tables in Excel, I made an appointment with a specialist on staff. I work here every day, and I’m still amazed and thrilled at everything that I can do with my library card.”
While adults discover new ways to use their library cards, our youngest visitors are just beginning their library adventure. For many children, a library card is the first step towards independence and responsibility. To discover the power their new card holds, families can join a Library Card Quest Saturday, Sept. 12 and have fun through stories, games, and hands-on activities. Later in the month, children ages five and up can create a custom, beaded Library Card Lanyard Wednesday, Sept. 23 to show off their brand-new card or a well-loved favorite. Both programs, held at Santori Library, are opportunities for children to discover how their library card sets the stage for a lifetime of learning.
If you’re still on the fence about registering for a library card, we have one more incentive this month: giveaways! “Come register for a card, get some sign-up gifts, and learn about all the new and fun things we have to offer!” said senior manager of Circulation, Yiota. “We get some of our best ideas from our community and offering giveaways is one way to show our appreciation.” Everyone (even long-time cardholders) can visit any of our Courtesy Services desks to submit an entry to win!
