Lunar New Year began Sunday, Jan. 22, and Aurora honored the occasion with a New Year’s Eve celebration to usher in the Year of the Rabbit. Aurora mayor Richard Irvin joined the City’s Chinese leaders and community members to issue a special proclamation urging all residents to support the Asian community by learning more about the Year of the Rabbit. In Chinese culture, the rabbit symbolizes longevity, peace, and prosperity. A traditional lion dance was held where children and adults ‘fed’ the lion red envelopes, symbolizing luck and prosperity for the year ahead. The celebration was held at Pacifica Square, Aurora’s Asian-theme shopping mall, which has nearly two dozen Asian-owned businesses. City of Aurora government photo
