Memorial Day is a significant day for many understandable reasons, if we choose to think of them!

Because Memorial Day arrives in late May, almost June, the mentality in our northern Illinois area is that of good weather. For many, it is the beginning of Summer which will extend well into September, beyond Labor Day, the first Monday of the month

Memorial Day to many, simply is the unofficial start of Summer and that time dominates any other thought or ritual. However, Memorial Day is so named for a reason. Originally a time to decorate grave sites with flowers and remember the ample dead from the U.S. Civil War, too many subsequent wars in the United States from the First World War through wars nearly once in a decade, have given Memorial Day significance. War dead are higher in numbers than they should be. Reason enough we must be careful to whom we wish a Happy Memorial Day. A family picnic is a happy occasion. A memorial and remembrance is much more somber and less jocular. Both are important.
