The Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission’s Cemetery Walk will return this year Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, 414 N. River Street in Montgomery. Guests will be led in small groups through the cemetery on a tour back in time, visiting gravesites with volunteer actors portraying Montgomery settlers and other cemetery residents.
This cemetery walk, geared toward all ages, is not scary, but offers an authentic glimpse into history, highlighting stories from the lives of real people who lived in our community long ago. This year’s event features a modern-day “Job,” a widow who bravely raised her family alone, a 19th-Century traveling salesman who became a millionaire, and a local business owner whose father fought in the Civil War. This year’s stories feature family names such as Hurl, Briggs, Watkins, and Beher.
Visitors are welcome to arrive any time between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.. Tours will begin at the corner of River and Taylor Streets, on the southeast side of the cemetery, approximately every 10 minutes. Parking is available along River Street near Montgomery Park. Visitors are advised to bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes.
If it rains, the Cemetery Walk will take place Thursday, Oct. 8, at the same time and location.
