Since 2022, the Aurora Public Library District (APLD) has participated in Illinois Libraries Present (ILP), a virtual program series that provides high-quality online events to library customers. Previous speakers include Nick Offerman, Kwame Alexander, Danny Trejo, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Dr. Temple Grandin. This year, APLD has expanded these events by offering simultaneous, in-person watch parties at the Santori Library. This addition makes it easier for more people to attend while also creating opportunities to connect and share the experience together.

Libraries have always been about meeting people where they are. By hosting these watch parties, we offer a welcoming, low-stress way for people to be included regardless of their internet connection at home. The livestream of the program will be shown on our big screen, and anyone is invited to drop in. “We hope to reduce barriers to programming and create more opportunities for our community to engage with the library and each other,” said event and program coordinator Ali.

There’s something special about experiencing an event alongside others, and the watch parties are designed to make that shared connection easy and fun. In addition to watching the program together, attendees can stick around for casual conversation about the topic and speakers, share thoughts, reactions, and favorite moments. “I know when I’ve finished watching an ILP event by myself, I often have so many inspiring thoughts about the author’s talk!” said reader’s advisory coordinator, Becky. “I want to share with others about their favorite points, but there’s not always anyone to talk to about it!” To make the experience even more welcoming, the watch parties will also include snacks, related materials, and a few giveaways for attendees to enjoy.

Both Ali and Becky are especially excited about our next ILP event! Tuesday, Feb. 24, we will have Still Afraid of the Dark: An Evening with R. L. Stine. Stine is most well-known for the horror series Goosebumps and other spooky thrillers for kids and teens. This program is for adults, so it will definitely have that nostalgia feel for readers who grew up reading his books. “I still remember reading the Fear Street series when I was younger—they were my introduction to pulse-pounding thrillers!” said Becky. “Growing up, I was horrified by and delighted with Stine’s books, and I’m looking forward to learning more about the author and his work,” added Ali.

Whether you prefer to watch from home or gather with others at Santori Library, Illinois Libraries Present programs are all about bringing meaningful experiences to everyone. Remember that registration is required to watch ILP programs from home, but anyone is welcome to watch with us at the library; no registration is necessary. Our R.L. Stine watch party will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 in Room 125/126 at the Santori Library.
