August is right around the corner, bringing one of Aurora’s favorite summer traditions: National Night Out (NNA). National Night Out is all about building connections, and that’s exactly why the Aurora Public Library District will once again be out in neighborhoods across our community. Through conversations, giveaways, and library card signups, we are helping more people discover everything the library has to offer.
National Night Out is a community-building event that’s been bringing neighbors, local organizations, and first responders together since 1984. Held annually on the first Tuesday of August, National Night Out now reaches more than 17,000 communities and 38 million neighbors nationwide! While each event has its own personality, attendees can expect a lively evening filled with food, games, music, giveaways, and family-friendly activities. “National Night Out is a wonderful chance to connect with neighbors, learn about community resources, and meet first responders,” said Outreach Services manager Jessica. “At past events, some locations have offered petting zoos, frozen treats, hot dogs, Touch-a-Truck, and much more!”
For APLD, National Night Out is an opportunity to interact with customers outside the library’s walls. “We think it’s really important to meet the community where they are,” said Circulation manager Yiota. “Some people can’t visit the library and this way we are able to go to them.” By participating in events across Aurora, we reach both frequent library users and people who may not have visited recently, or ever. “Connecting with residents in a block party atmosphere allows library staff to build rapport, especially with non-library users,” added Jessica. “If someone is hesitant or intimidated by the library, recognizing a staff member they met at a small community gathering helps them feel welcome.”
Residents who stop by our table or climb aboard the Bookmobile can expect more than just free giveaways (though there will be plenty of those, too). Staff will answer questions, share programming information, and demonstrate how easy it is to access library services. “We let everyone know that getting a library card is so quick and easy,” added Yiota. “You can register with us or from home, get your card via email, and download eBooks and audiobooks straight to your device.” It’s a simple way for residents to discover resources they may not realize are available to them.
