Decorated Converse sneakers are among works by 38 artists in ‘No Place Like Home, an exhibition through April 28 at Aurora University’s Schingoethe Center, 1315 Prairie Street in Aurora. The public is invited. Admission is free. Entitled “When We Used to Run with the Animals,” the shoes were hand painted with gold leaf by Chris Pappan, an Osage, Kaw, and Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux Native American, in a 2019 Schingoethe commission. Celebrating life on the Great Plains, Pappan drew buffalo and deer to stress that indigenous people did not go the way of the buffalo and are part of present-day American society and culture.
