Friends of the Fox River (FOTFR) was founded to give the River a voice. It needs your voice now.

Now is a crucial period in the history of the Fox River.

Since the Clean Water Act in 1972, efforts to restore the health and habitat of the Fox River have led to a slow improvement in Fox River water quality. Wastewater districts have invested more than $150 million in phosphorous removal. Removing dams is the next step.

More than 20 years of local research from various sources has found that removing the obsolete and dangerous dams is the best way to reduce nuisance algae, raise oxygen levels, and reconnect habitat for fish and mussels. For more information, https://friendsofthefoxriver.org/free-the-fox-river.

The Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) has recommended the removal of nine Fox River dams and will cover 65% of the associated costs. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is contributing 35%. Now is a crucial time to act in support of the Fox River, ACOE, IDNR, and FOTFR to #FREETHEFOXRIVER. Please support this effort with your voice by sending an E-mail to Fox-River-Study@usace.army.mil

Now is our opportunity to ask the ACOE a question and or leave a comment in support of their efforts. The Fox River Study Group (FRSG) has a petition with a comment option. These will be used after the November 6 ACOE deadline. Your comments there will be valuable for encouraging City Council members to remove their community’s dam.

FOTFR has been advocating for dam removal since our beginning in 1991. These are very exciting times for the restoration of the Fox River.

Thank you for your loyal support of FOTFR and for being a collaborative voice for the Fox River. Together, we keep on fixin’ the Fox.
