Orion ‘Schubertiad’ May 14

New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Boulevard in Aurora, will be host to acclaimed Chicago-based Orion Ensemble in a May 14 “Schubertiad” concert to celebrate the work of Franz Schubert.

The concert will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 14. Tickets are $30 for adults.

Concluding its 30th anniversary season, the Orion Ensemble expands its instrumental lineup and welcomes five exceptional guest musicians for the Schubertiad.

The program includes Schubert’s Octet in F Major for two violins, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, bassoon, and French horn, with Mathias Tacke (violin), previously second violinist of the Vermeer Quartet; frequent Orion guest artist and chamber musician Stephen Boe (viola); Robert Kassinger (bass) of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Andrei Muravev (bassoon) of the Chicago Sinfonietta; and Gregory Flint (horn), principal with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra.

They join Orion musicians Florentina Ramniceanu (violin), Judy Stone (cello) and Kathryne Pirtle (clarinet).

The program features Orion pianist Diana Schmück performing several Schubert songs transcribed by Franz Liszt.
