Illinois State representative Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is sponsoring a resolution in the Illinois State House of Representatives to declare December 26 as Cold War Veterans Recognition Day in the State of Illinois.

The resolution HR0443 is set to be considered during the fall veto session, aims to honor the valiant efforts and sacrifices made by the men and women of the Armed Forces during the Cold War period, which spanned from September 2, 1945, to December 26, 1991.

“It is imperative that we acknowledge the tremendous service made by our Cold War Veterans. Their contributions, often overshadowed by more recent conflicts, are no less significant,” said Kifowit. “During the Cold War millions of American service members stood watch, ensuring the safety and stability of our nation and the world. It is important to acknowledge their efforts and remember the sacrifices they made in the cause of defending democracy and promoting world peace and stability.”

During the Cold War, military exercises and operations were conducted to prevent the escalation of nuclear tensions and protect America and the world from the threat of nuclear war. Many Americans lost their lives during conflicts in pursuit of these noble goals.

The date, December 26, holds special significance, as in 1991 it marked the official end of the Cold War when the USSR dissolved into 15 nations. This historical moment signified the end of an era of tension and uncertainty.
