The Rotary Club of Batavia awarded a $2,000 scholarship to graduating Batavia High School seniors, Maisie Sweeney and Chloe Valentino.
Maisie Sweeney will attend the University of Minnesota and with a major in biomedical engineering for a goal of becoming a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, or a pediatric oncologist.
In addition to earning an excellent grade point average, as a member of the National Math and National English Honor Societies, and participating in 12 BHS Theater productions, Maisie held down three part-time jobs and participated in numerous community service projects during her high school career.
Chloe Valentino will attend the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, with a major in finance and public policy, to seek a career in business, or government relating to improving the infrastructure and quality of living in low-income communities.
Her excellent grade point average was supplemented as a member of the National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, and National Science Honor Society, as well as a founder and co-president of the Model UN, and as a four-year member of the high school soccer team. She was president of the Interact Club at Batavia High School where she organized and supervised many community service projects.
The Rotary Club of Batavia awards scholarships each year to students who show extraordinary ability and promise while at the same time dedicating themselves to service to others and to the community. These students most exemplify the Rotary Club’s motto of “Service above self.”
