For 100 years, Schaefer’s Greenhouses has been more than a place to buy flowers and plants – it has been a cornerstone of the Montgomery community, a family tradition, and a place where generations have created memories. At the Village Board meeting on June 22, Montgomery proudly celebrated a family legacy and a new chapter in community growth, as the business marks 100 years in the Village in 2026 and was honored with commemorative street signs.

Originally founded on Aurora’s west side by Frank C. Schaefer and John K. Newhall in 1905. The business laid down permanent roots at the current Montgomery location in 1926 with Frank as the sole owner. Schaefer’s Greenhouses has stood the test of time through changing seasons, generations, and a growing community. It began with just five greenhouses, a potting shed, and a boiler room. The Schaefer family built the business with dedication, hard work, and a commitment to serving their neighbors.

Today, the legacy continues as the Greenhouse enters its next chapter under new ownership. After searching for the right opportunity to transition into the business, the Schaefer family faced the possibility that the beloved local business could close if a new owner was not found. That is when Al and Donna Kuda of AEC Supply in Minooka stepped in – bringing a shared vision for preserving what made Schaefer’s special while creating new opportunities for the future.

The Schaefer family remains an important part of the business. Jane Schaefer Storm, a fourth-generation family member, continues to serve customers in the Customer Service department. Mike Schaefer, also a fourth-generation family member, continues to run the greenhouse operations. Brett Schaefer continues to run perennial growth operations, carrying forward the knowledge, care, and passion that have defined the Schaefers for a century.

“The story of Schaefer’s Greenhouses is a story of family, perseverance, and community,” said Matt Brolley, Village president. “For 100 years, this business has been a part of Montgomery’s history. We are grateful to see its legacy continue with a new generation of owners who recognize its value and are investing in its future.” Village trustees were at the meeting and presented a sign to the Schaefer family members in attendance, as well as to the new owners and staff.

The community is invited to celebrate this incredible milestone during Schaefer’s Greenhouses’ 100th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, July 18, beginning at 11 a.m.. The event will feature fun for all ages, including water slides, a petting zoo, live music, games, vendors, and much more.
