School-related focus at Aurora City Council

The Aurora City Council honored Marmion Academy’s ice hockey team Tuesday for recently winning the State championship in the White Division.
Dan Heckle, director of hockey operations for Marmion, said, “Marmion Academy is a proud resident of Aurora for 85 years and we are proud to bring the first State hockey championship to the city of Aurora.”
This year marks the 21st year Aurora has been honored as Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. Arbor Day will be Friday and the City government will plant trees at four schools, Hill Elementary, Simmons Middle School, Marmion Academy, and Cowherd Middle School. A tree will be planted in honor of the late Henry Cowherd.
• Approved was a resolution authorizing a memoranda of understanding between the city government of Aurora, St. Augustine College, CompTIA-Creating IT Futures, and the Kane County Local Workforce Innovation Area #5 to be submitted to the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic for consideration of workforce development training funds.
City of Aurora government documents state the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), outlined in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, funded by the U.S. Department of Labor issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the development of workforce development programs.
The city of Aurora government is the grantee and both CompTIA-Creating IT Futures and St. Augustine College are program training partners and the Kane County Local Workforce Development Area #5, a required partner as included in the NOFO, will be null and void if the city of Aurora does not receive DCEO funding from its current 2018 NOFO.
Eighth Ward alderman Rick Mervine inquired about a correspondence sent to all the aldermen about St. Augustine College.
“The correspondence did not picture St. Augustine in a wonderful light from a financial perspective. I have no idea whether that’s valid or not.”
Adrienne M. Holloway, chief innovation officer for the city of Aurora government stated, “The individual implicated in the E-mail is no longer with the institution.
“The institution is in good standing and it continues to be an accredited instituion.”
Mervine stated Waubonsee Community College was disappointed it wasn’t contacted about the program.
Mayor of Aurora, Richard Irvin, said, “Waubonsee Community College is one of the bedrock institutions that anchors what we have going on in the City and where we would like to take the City in educating our youth. As the second largest city in the state of Illinois, we have a lot of educational institutions that are in our borders.”
• Approved was a resolution to award the contract for the 77 S. Broadway Avenue (former PNC Bank building) parking structure and 65 Water Street demolition project to Performance Construction & Engineering, in Plano, for $578,000.00.
City of Aurora government documents state the parking structure at 77 S. Broadway Avenue is structurally unsafe requiring demolition.
After renovation is complete the City of Aurora government plans to move from its current building at 44 E. Downer a block away into the building.
• Approved was a resolution authorizing the city of Aurora government to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with Will County that will allow the city of Aurora government to be host to electronic recycling events.
