In response to the growing demand for programs tailored to seniors, the Aurora Public Library District is excited to announce an empowering upcoming event entitled Senior Self-Defense: Confidence & Safety with martial artist Peter Honingmann. Scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Eola Road Branch, this unique program aims to address the specific safety concerns of our beloved senior community members.

Through our diverse and enriching senior programming, APLD recognizes the importance of fostering a sense of community, well-being, and personal growth. The upcoming self-defense program is just one of the many initiatives aimed at meeting the evolving needs of our senior population. “There have been requests for offering more daytime programs for seniors,” said Library assistant, Rupangi Bakshi. “What could be a better program to make our community members feel safe and confident?” In this class, participants will learn practical, self-defense, techniques that are easy to learn and remember, as well as strategies for avoiding dangerous scenarios and increasing situational awareness. Attendees will learn how to wield commonly used items such as pens, keys, and canes for self-defense and address how to overcome mobility challenges in the face of danger. The Library offers a variety of programming for seniors but felt this program would boost their confidence when it comes to their safety and security.

Many of our current program offerings for seniors are based on customer suggestions. Our Games for Grownups program developed after a group of local neighbors and friends started utilizing the library space to get together. The one-on-one Technology Assistance service offers personalized help with a specific technology issue. Popular assistance topics include creating an E-mail address, using an eReader device, and downloading apps to a phone or tablet. Most recently we began a monthly ‘Older in Age, But Young in Spirit’ English/Spanish bilingual program that encourages folks over the age of 64 to socialize, exercise their minds, and have fun! These programs are in addition to the already stocked events we have for adults, including book clubs, crafts, and health seminars.

The Aurora Public Library District is committed to enhancing the lives of seniors in our community through a variety of programs that cater to their diverse interests and needs. The upcoming Senior Self-Defense: Confidence & Safety event on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. in the Eola Road Branch Small Meeting Room is a testament to this commitment, offering seniors a unique opportunity to learn practical self-defense techniques while fostering a greater sense of safety and confidence. Join us as we continue to strengthen our community bonds and empower our seniors through engaging and purposeful programming.
