Thank you for voting for the truth!

Thank you to the voters of Kane County and all of Illinois for voting for the truth November 8. We all received a barrage of fake newspapers, evil looking mailers, and negative texts that foretold doom and gloom if the Democrats stayed in power, especially governor JB Pritzker.

Fortunately, the voters knew that the Safe-T Act was not really going to release all of the prisoners from our jails overnight; that wearing bodycams would protect our police as well as the suspects of a crime; and that inflation would start coming down as soon as the Federal Reserve Bank’s strategies are given a little more time to work.

The Safe-T Act is intended to make the bail system work for all of the accused, both every-day people and those with deep pockets. The Republicans voted for a system that allows accused killers, abusers, and predators, to walk free every day if they can pay bail. Democrats created a smarter system that empowers judges to instead make custody decisions based on a public safety evaluation, not on a defendant’s access to cash. There will be a trailer bill coming soon that will make sure that any loopholes in the bill are corrected and that the true intentions of the Safe-T act will be realized.

We all have the responsibility to use our best judgment when it comes to truth versus lies. Sometimes we need to do our own research. Sometimes we need to use our own common sense. The voters of Kane County and Illinois have proven that we take our right to vote as a sacred privilege and that every vote must be based on the truth.

Thank you, voters, for proving once again that we care about our democracy.

Mavis Bates is Kane County Board member, District 4.
