As part of the Aurora Public Library District’s ongoing effort to bring relevant and thought-provoking programming to the community, we’re happy to introduce Study Circles Kickoff presented by Aurora resident Torian Richardson. The virtual program will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 and viewers do not need not be a Library card holder to participate. Tune in through Zoom or Facebook Live at @APLibraryIL.
Richardson received his bachelor of business administration in finance from Benedictine University, his master of public administration in international development from Tsinghua University, and has completed several graduate programs from Harvard Business School. Mr. Richardson is a trained facilitator who is inspired by individuals who exude inclusiveness, integrity, and compassion for others, and has extensive experience with analytics, culture, and people development. Torian believes Study Circles Aurora can foster positive attributes in individuals and communities.
So, what is a study circle? A study circle is a group of roughly nine to 10 participants who will engage in an open and honest form of dialogue to discuss these critical topics and issues. The goal of the group is finding commonality and improvement in areas in communities.
“Study Circles Aurora uses the tested and proven curriculum provided by a model called Dialogue to Change,” said events and program coordinator, Krista Danis. “This program was designed by non-profit Everyday Democracy and focuses specifically on race and racism.”
Of course, sharing of feelings and perspectives can create a tremendous amount of social discomfort. “Study Circles embraces a non-judgmental environment,” said Krista. “Participants can share perspectives, feelings, and experiences in a safe space with community members in efforts to better understand each other.”
The event will be moderated by the Study Circles Aurora executive director, Cathy Gaddis, and is open to the public. Participation is study circles is not required, so don’t forget to tune in for the presentation Thursday, Oct. 1. You can register for the event at aurorapubliclibrary.org/event/4589722.
