A focus on auto safety for the sake of kids in the Summer and all year long takes center stage at the media briefing Tuesday this week at Aurora City Hall. The campaign of Slow Down, Put Your Phone Down, and Slow down for kids, shared the spotlight with Peter Portillo, a State patroller of the year award recipient.

Portillo, third from left, is a student at Oak Park Elementary School in Aurora School District 131. From left are Aurora Police Department Commander Keith Cross, Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman, Portillo, and Richard C. Irvin, mayor of Aurora. Irvin holds the Mayor’s Award of Excellence presented to Portillo.

The award reads: Mayor’s Award of Excellence for representing your school and community in an excellent fashion and for being named Illinois patroller of the year by AAA auto club. Portillo wrote an award-winning essay to win the award.
