Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora is asking congregants and community members to write letters to support black Methodist churches vandalized in Washington, D.C., Dec. 12.

Saturday, Dec. 12, racist mobs attacked Asbury United Methodist and Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal churches, two renowned, historically black congregations in downtown Washington, D.C..

The marauders, many of them armed, ripped down and burned church signs on sacred ground. The signs read “Black Lives Matter.”

Reverend John Bell, Wesley UMC pastor, said “Wesley United Methodist Church stands in radical solidarity with our siblings of color at these two historical black churches.

“The same attitudes that led to the vandalizing of these black churches are the same attitudes of white people in Aurora who have asked us to take down our Black Lives Matter signs.

“Our faith calls us to stand up for racism in all of its forms. We offer our prayers, our voices, and our witness that Black Lives Matter.

“We encourage our congregation to write letters of support to these two congregations: Asbury United Methodist Church, 926 11th Street, NW Washington, D.C. 20001 and Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1518 M Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20005.”
