Twelve days after Christmas, January 6 marks the official celebration of Three Kings Day, or Día de los Reyes Magos, a popular holiday in Latin American and European cultures. The Aurora Public Library District (APLD) is offering a Celebration of Three Kings Day Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022. Registration is required for this all ages program.

Many community members remember celebrating Three Kings Day when they were children. Marianna Guerrero, Spanish Language Programmer at the Library, is no exception. “I wanted our community to have those memories even when we are in a different country. Now as a mother, I can’t wait to teach my daughter our beautiful tradition and celebration of the Three Wise Men.”

Similar to a visit from Santa Claus, the Three Wise Men will be in attendance for customers to meet and pose for photos. “Every year we have families that enjoy their time with the Three Wise Men. It is a wonderful Sunday afternoon celebration,” said Guerrero.

Multiple partners within the city of Aurora are coming together to make this program a possibility. A participant favorite is the “rosca de Reyes” or Three Kings Bread, a sweet bread traditionally enjoyed on Three Kings Day. Three Kings Bread is baked in the shape of a wreath or crown and adorned with fruits and nuts. Local bakeries will provide everyone with a taste of rosca to be enjoyed with chocolate milk from Oberweis.

In addition to the treats, for the children will be a storytime through Zoom at 2 p.m. with author Tere Rodriguez-Nora. Rodriguez-Nora will be sharing her book “La Estrella de los Reyes Magos” and offering a question-and-answer session afterwards. This presentation will be available to view on Facebook Live. All children attending may take home a Three Kings Day craft to complete and a gift, compliments of the Aurora Police Department.

The Aurora Public Library District hopes that customers enjoy this wonderful holiday tradition and share the magic with their children. Registration is required to attend the celebration at the library. Please register at aurorapubliclibrary.org/event/5782692.
