Two great events to support senior citizens and their families are scheduled for this fall in Aurora.
The Senior Resource Fair will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. through 1 p.m., at Senior Services Associates, 2111 Plum Street, Aurora.
Senior Services 20th annual Pie Auction, the agency’s premier fundraising event, will be held Friday, Nov. 20 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Belle Salle Banquets, 1920 E New York Street in Aurora.
“Senior Services Associates, Inc. is your local contact for Information & Assistance, Care Coordination, Adult Protective Services, access to nutrition, and the Volunteer Transportation Program, designed to help 60 and older adults who live in their own home maintain their independence and access the healthcare services they need,” said coordinator Lisa Simpson.
Senior Services is the local home to AmeriCorps/RSVP too, a national program that helps local non-profits and volunteers who want to give back to the community. Rebecca Koss coordinates AmeriCorps/RSVP for Southern Kane and Kendall counties. “Learning what others need and matching volunteers to serve in that capacity is fulfilling and enjoyable,” she said. “Feel free to reach out to me to learn more.”
Senior Services also offers health information, exercise classes, recreation opportunities, and new friendships too.
The annual Senior Resource Fair on October 20th brings together several vendors and service providers to showcase their services in a free and relaxing environment. Vendors can sign up to attend by contacting Rebecca Koss at 630-897-4035. Seniors, family members and caregivers can attend free of charge. “Some vendors have raffle baskets, and some have small giveaways or candy for visitors” said Cindy Adams, coordinator- friendly visiting & phone calls.
“The first 50 seniors attending this year’s resource fair can get a pair of Bombas socks too, thanks to Christina Marotta of Batavia United Way who generously gifted us with 50 Bombas socks to give away at our Resource Fair,” Adams said, “I was so happy to receive them. Seniors need a good pair of socks on their feet. This was a very thoughtful gift, and I know our attendees will love them!” she added.
For those interested in other activities at the busy center or in signing up for lunches at the center, a phone call to Amanda Creighton at 630-897-4035 is the best way to start. Those wishing to register for community dining must call or sign up at least seven days in advance.
