In honor of World Cancer Day on February 4, the City of Aurora government will honor tonight, a young cancer patient who was diagnosed one year ago on February 7, 2023.

Sixth-grader Abigail Ayala, 12, was diagnosed with a Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor, an aggressive sarcoma. She has spent the last year battling cancer, undergoing major surgery, and is completing her 18th and final round of chemotherapy before beginning radiation.

Her mother, Sandra, calls her daughter a hero and warrior who has learned to be strong and resilient regardless of how tough or painful things have been.

Mayor Richard Irvin will present Abigail with an award and gifts in recognition of her courageous fight and in honor of World Cancer Day and her first anniversary.
