A call to protect and defend on home front widespread

Herschel Luckinbill of the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club called Monday. His message was not surprising. “We will not meet Thursday (7 a.m. at the VFW Post 7452). We will wait to see when we can meet again.”

The call was not surprising considering the day prior the State government called for a ban on all groups of 50 or more individuals. The ban, which is temporary, is to help prevent the spread of the spreading COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Death is possible, however, a much higher percentage will suffer in a wide range of sickness. The virus started in China, spread throughout Asia and Europe, hit hardest in Italy, and has found its way to all continents. As of Tuesday evening this week, the Illinois had reported one death and more than 100 who have contracted the virus. A death was reported in Kane County. Deaths had passed 100 in the United States.

Caution is urged.

Veteran Luckinbill knows that 70 or 80 veterans likely would show up for the breakfast which meets every other Thursday.

Many other cancellations and postponements can be found within these pages of The Voice this week. We have received many E-mail with the news. Should there be mass contracting of the virus within northern Illinois, regret would be more than ample that prevention was eschewed. The term abundance of caution does not go unnoticed. Can you say disinfecting and social distance?

• Political candidates fall into the trap of not telling the truth and using false denial.

• Plural of person is not people. Plural is persons.

• One fast-food company’s adverting slogan many years ago that included the word liking, set a trend of words that incorrectly end in the letters ing.
