A wakeup: Repent of the wrongs

Dear editor;

I woke up this morning and said, “This is wrong.” I am white. It was wrong of us to come to this Country and take land and lives from Native Americans even in the name of God. I think of the 500 who lived in peace along the Fox River and had to just go.

It was wrong of us to come here to develop an economy by enslaving and demeaning African Americans. It was just wrong. It is still wrong that we still do not allow people of color and Native Americans to have the same opportunities that we have been given. So many have been locked out of the American dream through no fault of their own. A few have made it, but not the majority. Even if they have made it, they still suffer inequality that is not so obvious.

What bothers me the most is that it was and is often still being done in the name of God. So many Christians think Donald Trump will bring this Country back to Christian roots that never existed in the first place.
Slavery and prejudice are not Christian values.

Even as a Christian, I know that our Constitution and other documents came from many valued sources, not just the Bible. Freedom of religion does not mean freedom to oppress or displace the other. We of European white descent need to repent of what we have done if there is any hope to turn this Country around. I understand, but do not condone violence. There is an anger because of injustice that only can be healed by the love of God and the honesty of the oppressors of what they have done.

We as white people, we as Christians with the ultimate answer, do not have the answers for the moment until we repent and then stand up for righteousness for all U.S. residence.
