DuPage Board against rail merger

The DuPage County Board voted Tuesday, March 8 to join a coalition of communities that are opposing the merger of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Kansas City Southern Company.

In October 2021, Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern Company filed an application with the Surface Transportation Board seeking authorization for the Canadian Pacific Railway to acquire the Kansas City Southern Company.

The proposed merger would directly impact residents and businesses in the northern parts of the County. Several communities have already joined the Coalition to Stop CPKC, including Bartlett, Bensenville, Hanover Park, Itasca, Roselle, and Wood Dale.

“This plan would more than triple the number of freight trains that come through these communities, leading to longer traffic delays and increased noise and emissions,” said DuPage County Transportation Committee chairman Don Puchalski.
