Are you interested in saving money on groceries and prolonging the life of your food?
Fox Valley residents John and Char Johnson-Dunlop will make a presentation at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 751 W. Bowes Road, Elgin, for the program “I’m Freezing! Hope You Are Too.”
Participants can learn how to freeze and dehydrate different types of food when John and Char share their techniques and years of experience during a hands-on demonstration where they will discuss and display “put up” fruit jerkies, frozen produce and other healthy treats.
Food safety will be addressed during the program, and questions from the audience will be encouraged. With gardeners harvesting vegetables, the timing is perfect to learn these life skills, which will enable individuals to extend beyond the growing season the life of the healthy foods they grow. But you don’t need to be a gardener to learn these skills – farmers’ market produce is ideal for freezing or dehydrating. This program is being presented by The Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley, a nonprofit organization based in Batavia that is committed to building sustainable and just food systems, as well as restoring quality and equality to the food supply.
