September is National Voter Registration Month and Kane County Clerk John A. Cunningham reminds Kane County residents who are not registered to vote, or need to update their voter registration information, to do so during the month of September.
Cunningham said, “We have a very important election coming up this year: November 3, 2026 General Election. Voters will have the opportunity to elect candidates for a variety of federal, state and county offices, from the county board and countywide officers, all the way up to the governor and the U.S. Senate. However, you must be registered to participate in the vote process.”
To register to vote, individuals must meet the following qualifications under state law:
•Be a U.S. citizen;
•Must be 18 years of age by Election Day; or 17 years of age to register to vote in a general primary or consolidated primary if the individual will be 18 on the date of the immediately following general or consolidated election
•Reside in the precinct for 30 days prior to the next election.
Kane County residents can register to vote in person, by mail, or online.
In person: Registration can be completed at the Kane County Clerk’s Office,719 S. Batavia Ave. (Bldg. B) in Geneva, or at 5 E. Downer Pl. (Ste. F) in Aurora. If you wish to register in person, you must show two valid, current forms of identification. For a list of acceptable forms of ID, visit https://clerk.kanecountyil.gov/Elections/Pages/Voter-Registration.aspx. A list of other local governmental offices with voter registration services can also be found.
By mail: A completed registration form (available at https://clerk.kanecountyil.gov/Elections/Pages/Voter-Registration-Application.aspx) can be mailed with copies of two forms of identification to the Clerk’s Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave. (Building B), Geneva.
Online: Online registration is available through the State Board of Elections online portal at https://ova.elections.il.gov. Online registrants must have a valid driver’s license or state ID with a matching current address to register online.
Voters who have recently changed their names or addresses, including those who have moved or changed a name after marriage/divorce, also need to update voter information with the Clerk’s Office. While the focus of voter registration is often on unregistered voters, remaining registered includes keeping voter information current with the Clerk’s Office.
