The Kane County Health Department (KCHD), in partnership with University of Illinois Extension, the Kane County Hunger Relief Network, and local organizations throughout the County, is recognizing September as Hunger Action Month to raise awareness about food insecurity and connect residents with available food resources.
Hunger Action Month is a nationwide campaign that encourages communities to take action against hunger through awareness, advocacy, volunteerism, and support for local food assistance programs. Throughout September, organizations across Kane County will work together to highlight the challenges many individuals and families face in accessing nutritious food and promote resources available to those in need.
According to Feeding America, 11.1% of Kane County residents and 10.5% of children experienced food insecurity in 2023. In addition, 37.1% of Kane County households fell below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold, indicating that many working families continue to struggle to afford basic necessities, including food.
“Food insecurity affects people in every community, including working families who may be facing rising costs and difficult choices about how to make ends meet,” said Michael Isaacson, KCHD executive director. “Hunger Action Month is an opportunity for all of us to learn more, share resources, and take action. By working together, we can help ensure that Kane County residents have access to the food they need to thrive.”
Throughout Hunger Action Month, community partners will participate in a coordinated awareness campaign featuring educational social media content, local resource highlights, and a partner video. The campaign will focus on raising awareness of food insecurity in Kane County, addressing common misconceptions about hunger, highlighting those most impacted, and connecting residents with available resources.
