Reader’s Voice: Sign in favor of Lauren Underwood stolen

Dear editor;
Is my voice strong? I hope so, because I have something to say. I had permission to put up a large Lauren Underwood sign on a prominent corner in Oswego. Hardly two days later that sign was gone. When I talked to the owner who gave me permission to add my Democratic Party sign to the mix of Republican Party signs, he confirmed he had not removed it. Through simple deduction it seemed a Republican was not able to abide one single Democratic sign among the many Republican signs.

Plain and simple, that’s stealing. The sign cost $50 and I cannot retrieve that money and the sign is useless to the thief. Sadly, it’s a crime that will go unpunished, except possibly in the thief’s conscience, maybe striking when talking to kids about right and wrong, to adults about law and order, when reciting the Ten Commandments, Thou shalt not steal, and when driving and seeing the Republican signs still up, a twinge of guilt.

I have no sign, just words to tell you about Lauren Underwood. She is the Democratic Party candidate in the 14th Congressional District for representative in the U.S. Congress. I met Lauren in February before the Primary and I was impressed enough to vote for her then and in early voting at Village Hall, along with all other Democrats on the ballot, except for one Republican who had no opponent.

Lauren is a registered nurse with a manageable pre-existing condition. She has spent her career working for affordable health care access and will continue that fight in Congress. Accepting not even a dime from the NRA, she supports reasonable gun laws.

Lauren’s opponent is Republican Party incumbent Randy Hultgren. He votes with his party and not for the good of the country, or for you, meaning that everything Lauren is for, he already voted against. The recent tax cuts benefit only the very rich and will never trickle down to you and me. Lauren’s Democratic vote can help prevent further Republican-planned-cuts to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Student financial aid, infrastructure projects, and veterans’ programs.

Straight out of Republican U.S. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell’s mouth: Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, all need to be cut in order to pay for those tax breaks for the rich provided by the Republicans. I’ll be out on the street without those so-called entitlements that we have paid into. How about you?
