This Summer, the U.S. West has seen record high temperatures. In some areas, temperatures surpassed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and lasted for many days.

“It’s always difficult to immediately quantify how much impact climate change has had on a climate extreme,” said meteorologist/climatologist, Tom Di Liberto. “But there is plenty of evidence to show that [these] high temperatures and heat waves have become worse due to climate change.”

What possibly can be done to solve this issue?

Answers can be found to potential solutions during the program, Solutions to Climate Change: An Interactive Presentation. The Aurora Public Library District (APLD) will be host to the virtual program at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13 through Zoom. Please note that the program is for adults and students age 16 and older. Registration is required.

When asked why the program is important to host, Janet Stephens, Adult Services librarian at Aurora’s West Branch, replied:

“The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of more than 1,300 scientists from around the world, predicts the following [in regards to climate change]: Rising temperatures, increased heavy precipitation events, more intense heat waves, melting of arctic ice and sea level rise, though changes will vary between regions. The IPCC’s most recent report shows that “Over the past 171 years, human activities have raised atmospheric concentrations of CO2 by 48% above pre-industrial levels found in 1850. This is more than what had happened naturally over a 20,000 year period (from the Last Glacial Maximum to 1850.)”

Citizens’ Climate Education’s Andy Panelli will be presenting the program, covering climate change topics such as solutions, their effectiveness and current climate change legislation. Far from a simple information session, participants will get to interact with the presentation by proposing climate change solutions and seeing the impact they would have with the MIT Sloan climate simulator.

In addition to host to Solutions to Climate Change, APLD has a plethora of climate change materials available to check out as well. Stephens recommends the following titles:

• “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster: The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need” by Bill Gates;

• “The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming” by David Wallace-Wells;

• “Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses, and Citizens Can Save the Planet” by Michael Bloomberg and Carl Pope;

• “Climate Change: A Very Short Introduction” by Mark Maslin;

• “Nuestra casa está ardiendo: Una familia y un planetaen crisis” de Greta Thunberg / “Our House Is on Fire: Scenes of a Family and a Planet in Crisis” by Greta Thunberg.

In order to deepen knowledge on climate change APLD can place holds or register those interested for Solutions to Climate Change today . It will help make a positive impact on the issue. For more information about this event and to register, visit aurorapubliclibrary.org/events.
